Vegetative filter strips can reduce sediment delivery from eroding agricultural land. The major objective of this study was to obtain a simplified procedure for calculating the effectiveness of filter strips at removing sediment from shallow overland flow. The CREAMS (USDA, 1980) model was demonstrated to predict sediment delivery through strips similar to that observed in several experimental studies of filter strips. Simplified equations from CREAMS were derived to allow rapid hand calculation of sediment delivery, and predictions of sediment delivery ratios using the simple equation were quite close to those predicted using the complete CREAMS model (r^ = 0.99).
