Why the study?
Does prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy reduce all-cause mortality in patients with ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy?
Does prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy reduce all-cause mortality in patients with ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy?
This letter comments on a meta-analysis supporting the use of prophylactic ICDs to reduce all-cause mortality in patients with ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy.

European and U.S. guidelines assign a class I recommendation for prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in patients with systolic heart failure, but a study of patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (DANISH [Danish Study to Assess the Efficacy of ICDs in Patients with Non-ischemic Systolic Heart Failure on Mortality]) did not show mortality benefit from this intervention (2). In response, Kołodziejczak and colleagues performed a meta-analysis of prophylactic ICD trials (1). They reported that prophylactic ICDs significantly reduced all-cause mortality, supporting use of this intervention in patients with ischemic or ...References1.
