What is the value of formal internship programs for new nursing graduates? Are internships worth the resources they require? How does a nursing administrator answer these questions? A three-year study of one internship program at a university hospital provides some direction in developing or deciding to develop a formal nursing internship. The authors compare the role transition experienced by the interns to role transition for nurses in a traditional hospital orientation program. Their conclusions suggest new evaluation criteria and areas for further study.
