The isotypic compounds (MC 4 O 4 ·2 H 2 O) 3· CH 3 COOH·H 2 O(M=Zn 2+ ,Ni 2+ ) crystallize in the cubic space group Pn3n. The 3-dimensional framework structure contains cavities, which may be filled with CH 3 COOH · H 2 O . The metal ions are coordinated almost octahedrally by two water molecules and four oxygen atoms of four C 4 O 4 2- dianions. Thus the squarate dianions act as fourfold monodentate ligands. Strong hydrogen bonding between H 2 O and C 4 O 4 2- has to be assumed.
