Compiles forensic standards for athletic drug testing; leaves open integration into cardiovascular risk protocols pending primary validation studies.
The use of performance‐enhancing drugs by athletes is not a new phenomenon but testing for these substances began only in the 1960s. Since that time, various regulators of athletic competitions have developed lists of substances whose use by athletes is banned. This article discusses the regulations and chain of custody requirements of different sports oversight agencies, the classes of banned substances, the analytical techniques for the detection of these substances, and the laboratory certification requirements of the governing bodies of sport.
