The reactivity of LMO 3 and L′MO 3 complexes as ligands has been investigated (L = C 6 H 15 N 3 , 1,4,7-triazacyclononane; L′ = C 9 H 21 N 3 , N,N′,N″-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane; M = Mo VI , W VI ). The crystal structures of [(L′MoO 3 ) 4 Co II ][BPh 4 ] 2 · C 2 H 5 OH (1) and [(L′MoO 3 ) 4 Fe III ][BPh 4 ] 3 · Na[BPh 4 ] (2) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Both the Co II and Fe III centers are in a tetrahedral environment of four oxygen atoms which are connected to L′MO 2 fragments. The reaction of LMO 3 complexes (M = Mo VI , W VI ) in aqueous solution with tetraphenylborate(1–) anions yields LMO 3 BPh 3 or [(LMO 3 ) 2 BPh 2 ][BPh 4 ] complexes and benzene. The crystal structures of LWO 3 BPh 3 (3) and [(LWO 3 ) 2 BPh 2 ][BPh 4 ] (4) have been determined.
