Sialidase is shown to be localized in the lysosomes of rat liver and kidney. The pH optimum with sialyllactose as substrate is 4.4, and with glycoproteins is 4.0. The enzyme is not affected by many divalent metal ions, ethylenediaminetetraacetate, or p-chloromercuribenzoate, and is active against many glycoproteins and gangliosides, indicating its possible role in their intracellular digestion.
