The accuracy of electron polarisation measurements has considerably improved over the years so that the time is ripe for clarifying a few serious discrepancies between theory and experiment. In the present experiment the Sherman function for elastic electron scattering from xenon is measured at 30 eV by two different methods: a polarisation measurement and an asymmetry measurement. The two measurements give the same results which confirm the latest theoretical data. The measurements also make possible an accurate determination of the analysing power of the Mott detector.
