Achieving coordination between the regional digital economy and green production is vital for fostering regional sustainable development. However, scholars have focused more on digital development and green cumulative effects rather than on the relationship between the digital economy and green production efficiency, as well as mechanism analysis. This paper employs a fixed effects model to measure the driving mechanisms of the coupling coordination degree (CCD) between the digital economy and green production. The results reveal that: (1) From 2013 to 2021, the average CCD between the digital economy and green production in Chinese cities increased from 0.43 to 0.58, indicating a transition towards a moderate level of coupling coordination. (2) The urban digital economy has the strongest positive impact on CCD (0.3841), followed by green production (0.2563), while the level of openness to the outside world has the weakest positive influence (0.0187). Although urban population mobility has a negative impact, the local education level significantly moderates the effect of population mobility on the local green-digital CCD, with an interaction coefficient of 0.0057 between population mobility and local education level. (3) The influence of green production and population mobility on local CCD is noticeably weaker in the western region than in the eastern region. However, the positive impact of digital economy development on CCD is significantly stronger in the central and western regions than in the eastern region. (4) Spatial dependence between neighboring cities is evident. These results provide valuable policy references for promoting urban green-digital CCD.
