May support POC immunoassays for rapid cardiac assessment; leaves open outcome trials versus central labs.
Peripheral levels of cardiac markers provide valuable information to clinical cardiologists. Biomarkers are currently available for both myocardial damage and myocardial function and have been incorporated into guidelines for care. A consideration of some of the prevalent current methods for cardiac marker point-of-care testing is presented in the context of current technological issues. Currently all of the cardiac biomarkers are proteins measured in blood by immunoassay. Immunoassay technology is developing rapidly to support the current and expanding role of cardiac marker point-of-care testing. Although guidelines will undoubtedly be refined as outcomes data become available, current systems can provide precise quantitative testing with linkage to laboratory information systems.
