The red-violet, liquid-crystalline dye 1, which shows an extraordinarily broad mesophase, is obtained by twofold [2 + 4] cycloaddition of 3,5-dioxotriazoles to alkyl-substituted perylenes. These soluble compounds allow the use of a perylene pigment as a mesogen for the first time. R = n-CxHx + 1 (x = 5, 12, 18); R′ = Ph, n-CxHx + 1 (x = 5, 11, 17, 21).
