In this paper a cognitive science perspective is applied to the practical construction problems examined by researchers in the Gestalt school of psychology. An information processing theory of these problems is developed and implemented in a computer program. The theory is then considered in the light of previous research and used to account for the phenomenon of ‘functional fixedness’
