Project maps land disturbances in military and historic times, indicating environmental impacts in El Paso County.
This project delineates land disturbances during the pre-colonial, historic, and military-era time periods and is summarized on a map that indicates disturbed areas along with the varying degree of disturbance present. Using historical imagery from before, during, and after construction of United States Air Force Academy and high-resolution LiDAR data, land disturbance features were mapped for the entirety of the campus. A total of 953 features were mapped by hand while 48,959 features were automatically assigned a disturbance value from Geobase data. Nearly half of the United States Air Force Academy campus did not have land disturbances. The remaining areas were mapped as disturbed with the following category and percentages: Undisturbed – 45.59% (8,431.2 acres); Light Disturbance – 1.85% (342.9 acres); Moderate Disturbance – 14.63% (2,706.0 acres); High Disturbance, Bladed – 24.35% (4,502.1 acres); High Disturbance, Fill – 1.43% (263.8 acres); Developed Area – 8.19% (1,515.0 acres); Archeological Site Disturbance – 0.00% (0.7 acres); Fluvial Disturbance – 3.18% (588.4 acres); and Potential Soil Slumping Area – 0.77% (142.4 acres).
