Mn(III)Cl3 species coordinated with monodentate pnictogen-oxide ylide (PnO) ligands, such as Ph3PO, are useful compounds for synthesis of new Mn(III) complexes and alkene and C–H halogenation chemistry. In this report, we detail the result of using a bidentate PnO ligand, extending the family of pnictogen oxide stabilized Mn(III) systems. Reaction of methylene-bis(diphenylphosphine oxide) (dppmO) with Mn(III) chloride precursors affords [MnIIICl2(dppmO)2]2[MnIIICl5] (2). MicroED and spectroscopic characterization indicate chelation of the phosphine oxide ligand with a pentachloridomanganate(III) counter dianion.
