Prospective, multicenter observational study conducted across 20 centers in Egypt from April 2011 to February 2014 within the ESC-HF Long-Term Registry.
Enrolled N=2145 patients with heart failure, stratified into hospitalized acute heart failure (n=1475, 68.8%) and ambulatory chronic heart failure (n=670, 31.2%).
Hospitalized patients were older (median age 61 [IQR 53–69] vs 57 [IQR 46–64] years; P < 0.0001) and had higher diabetes rates (45.4% vs 31.8%; P < 0.0001) compared to ambulatory patients, with left ventricular ejection fraction >45% in 22% vs 25.6% (P = 0.17).
Ischemic heart disease was the primary etiology of heart failure, atrial fibrillation affected 24.5% of patients, and all-cause in-hospital mortality was 5%.
Egyptian patients presented at a younger age with more diabetes but lower rates of atrial fibrillation, renal dysfunction, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease than patients in other registry regions.
