The giant magnetoresistance characteristics in spinvalve films containing α-Fe2O3 antiferromagnetic films were investigated. Thin NiFe films on α-Fe2O3 films exhibit large coercivity and a small uniaxial biasing field, both due to exchange coupling between the two layers. Spin-valve films having an α-Fe2O3/NiFe/Cu/NiFe structure show a large MR ratio of 6.1% and high sensitivity in a low applied field. These MR characteristics are caused by the different coercivities of the two NiFe layers. The above spin-valve films also have a relatively high blocking temperature and high corrosion resistance, and are thus suitable for use in MR heads and sensors.
