SUMMARY Acute abdominal diseases of the horse are discussed according to diagnostic protocol, mechanisms of septic shock, and principles of therapy. The principal diagnostic step is determination of irreversible morphocellular damage. Septic shock is mediated by vasoconstriction and capillary pooling. Therapy is based on relief of pain, maintenance of capillary perfusion, and relief of obstruction.
