The meteorological situations associated with unprecedented rainfall in the summer rainfall areas during July to September 1957 and the phenomenally dry winter of 1958 are discussed. There are significant departures from normal of the mean isobars for the rain periods in 1957 but although July 1958 was almost rainless even in the southwest Cape the departures of mean isobars or upper air data for the month from the normals are not so striking.
