Complete surgical resection of intracaval and intracardiac leiomyoma is essential to prevent tumor recurrence.
May support complete resection to limit recurrence in rare IVC leiomyoma; leaves open need for multicenter validation.
Intravascular leiomyoma extending to the inferior vena cava (IVC) and right heart is a rare condition that generally occurs in middle-age women.1 Treatment consists of surgical tumor removal in a single-stage or staged interventions. Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest is often required to remove the intracardiac and intracaval portions of the leiomyoma.2 Recurrence of the leiomyoma has been observed in one third of patients who undergo incomplete resection; however, complete resection leads to excellent results with no recurrence.
