In an attempt to develop immunoassays to more accurately determine prior exposure to Salmonella typhi, to detect immune responses after vaccination with live oral typhoid vaccines, and to help uncover the mechanisms of protective immunity to typhoid fever, we studied antibodies and lymphocytes from individuals with varied presumed immune status to S. typhi, including residents of both typhoid-endemic and typhoid-free regions.
