The transverse Zeeman effect on the absorption lines of the monoclinic GdCl3–6H2O was examined at various field strengths. Photographs were made with the crystals at various temperatures. Enlarged reproductions and microphotometer curves are given. The results are discussed and explained on the assumption that if an electron is excited as a first approximation only its spin can orient in a magnetic field.
