Finite element model simulations of ice sheet dynamics are conducted to investigate the role of natural atmospheric CO 2 variations (obtained from ice core bubbles) in creating climatic conditions necessary to glaciate the Eurasian Arctic. Effects of CO 2 variations are sufficient to support extensive marine ice sheet and ice shelf development at the last glacial maximum and to deglaciate the region during the Holocene (from approximately 14 ka to 9 ka). The ice sheet coverage simulated for the last glacial maximum agrees with evidence for extensive ice sheet grounding over the shallow continental shelves of the Barents, Kara, Laptev, and East Siberian seas. An ice shelf also forms over the Arctic Ocean and Greenland and Norwegian seas.
