The literature on language attitude studies is extensive and this paper attempts an overview by considering the history of such studies and their theoretical basis. Studies of students’ language attitudes are examined before a more extensive review of teachers’ language attitudes is undertaken. Teachers’ attitudes to West Indian students’ and Black American students’ language are given particular attention.
