Trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) in six natural waters was reduced by using alum or ferric chloride coagulation in bench‐scale studies. The coagulants were tested at ambient pH (8.5) and modified pH (6.0). The effects of several coagulant aids on THMFP reduction were also considered. Coagulation under modified pH conditions removed more THMFP than coagulation under ambient pH conditions. The effectiveness of coagulation in removing THMFP depended on coagulation process variables as well as raw water characteristics.
