Why the study?
With the increasing popularity of scuba diving and rising fatal accidents, identifying liability profiles through forensic pathology is crucial.
A multidisciplinary approach is crucial for forensic pathologists to reconstruct the dynamics and mechanisms of fatal recreational scuba diving accidents.
Retrospective analysis of scuba fatalities informs forensic liability assessment; leaves open need for prospective prevention studies.
Scuba diving is an increasingly popular activity worldwide for both professional and recreational purposes. For this reason, there has also been an increase in fatal accidents in which the role of the forensic pathologist is crucial to identify possible liability profiles. In our retrospective study, we analyzed fatal events occurring during recreational scuba diving between 2005 and 2024 near the islands and coasts of southern Tuscany. Circumstantial and autopsy data from individual cases were examined: this analysis showed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in order to reconstruct the dynamics of the accidents and identify the multiple mechanisms that can lead to death.
