The globalization processes, the intensification of Islamic movements in the world and the intra-Islamic reflection led to the public’s close attention to the phenomenon of Islamic feminism. The article discusses the public views of the well-known Muslim feminist and activist of Germany Seyran Ates regarding gender equality, forced marriage, wearing the hijab and homosexuality. The conclusion is made about Ates’s significant contribution to the development of the so-called «enlightened» Islam and about her influence on the Western discourse. At the same time, not only the uniqueness of her theoretical advances is noted, but rather the phenomenon of a successful media presentation of her project in Western society which is intended to undermine the modern Islamic mainstream in Germany.
