A water vapor jet was used in the terminal of a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator as a stripping medium. The design of this jet system, which passed a beam 2.6 cm in diameter, is described. When used experimentally, the jet converted negative ions into positive ions with an efficiency >90% and a maximum proton current of 180 μA was measured at a beam energy of 2 MeV. This jet has also been used for the production of negative ions at low energies and the equilibrium fractions for a hydrogen ion beam in water vapor are listed.
