A single-stage tandem accelerator, which utilizes the principle of neutral-beam injection, is described. Ten microamperes of high energy negative hydrogen ions have been obtained. These ions may be injected into a second twostage tandem accelerator, thus obtaining higher energies for nuclear studies. By reversing the polarity of the injector terminal, positive hydrogen ion currents in the 100-μA range have been obtained.
