The purpose of this study was to initiate a data-based exploration of the specific cognitive distortions and rationalizations that outpatient child sexual offenders utilize with regard to their maladaptive sexual behavior. To this end 101 acknowledged sexual offenders responded to an open-ended questionnaire regarding these factors. The 357 statements generated by the subjects were sorted into equivalent statements, resulting in a list of 38 cognitive distortions and rationalizations. Potential applications of this list for both clinical work and as a base for future empirical investigations are discussed.
