The heat-transfer equation for the atmosphere is integrated numerically for a 24-hour period; various forms are assumed for the heat exchange coefficient KH. The results are in reasonably good agreement with observation. The maximum error is about 1.5°K when the ratio KH/Km = r is 1 and a scaling height is made a function of the local potential temperature gradient.
