A physical model is constructed for studying the response of the lowest atmospheric layers and the underlying soil stratum to incoming solar radiation and other external influences. The model consists of three strata: a soil layer, a surface layer in which the vertical fluxes of heat, momentum, and moisture are constant with height, and an overlying transition layer. The dependent variables are the air temperature and moisture, wind, and soil temperature. The equations have been integrated to simulate diurnal temperature variations in clear weather with unchanging large-scale synoptic conditions. The results indicate that the model reproduces many important characteristics of the boundary layer.
