Intravenous infusion of lithium in a concentration of 13 or 5 m m in a hypotonic fluid at a rate of 0.167 ml per minute to Inactin® anaesthetized 200 g rats caused an inhibition of the effect of 80 μU arginine-vasopressin on diuresis, urine osmolality and urine conductivity. This inhibition was not reversible for up to 150 min after cessation of the infusion of lithium. When isolated hemilobes of neurohypophyses of rats were stimulated by a high concentration of potassium in the incubation medium, pre-incubation with 24 m m lithium in the medium did not inhibit the release of hormone. On the contrary, when the hemilobes were stimulated a second time, a higher release of hormone into the medium than in control experiments was found.
