Summary The article examines studies which have sought to enhance self‐esteem in school children by experimental means in the USA and the UK. It reviews work which has sought intervention through: (i) areas of the curriculum; (ii) special classroom procedures; (iii) changes in teacher behaviour; and (iv) changes in pupil behaviour. The review is followed by a discussion of issues which arise from the experiments including that of a causal link between self‐esteem and achievement together with implications for classroom practice.
