Why the study?
The effects of Ca 2+ on the function of tropomodulin family proteins, including leiomodin, involved in regulating thin filament formation had not yet been studied.
Ca2+ binds directly to leiomodin and attenuates its actin nucleating activity, providing further evidence of Ca2+ as an ultimate regulator of sarcomeric protein interactions essential for muscle function.
