This review summarizes the mechanisms of calcium release from the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum and its modulation during myocardial contraction.
Offers consolidated mechanistic insights into cardiac contraction; leaves open targeted therapeutic validation in contractile disorders.
Several reviews (18, 27-29, 35, 60) published in the last few years have dealt with cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum, and elsewhere in this section (61a) the molecular events of Ca transport in the reticulum are considered. Here attention is focused on specific properties of the reticulum that are impor tant to its integrated function within the cardiac cell, in particular the triggering mechanism for release of calcium from the reticulum, changes in the properties of the reticulum during the cardiac cycle, and the modulation of sarcoplasmic Ca during a normal contraction of it myocardial cell.
