Canada and the United States have an abundance of public lands and natural resources that offer significant actual and potential opportunities for outdoor activity. Public land and natural resource management in Canada and the US differs in terms of governance structures, funding mechanisms, and management methods. The objective of this article is to explore and present the different approaches to governance and management of outdoor recreation and public lands in the two countries and discuss the challenges linked to these approaches as they relate to the management of natural resources and outdoor recreation. A literature review was carried out using the available academic literature, government reports and literature, and the various government websites. Canada has a much more coherent national vision, while the US has much more information available for decision-making.
