A derivation of equations useful in interpreting isomer shifts in the Mossbauer effect is outlined, following isotopeshift theory closely. The present and potential applications of isomer shift measurement to chemistry and metal physics are discussed, and some conclusions about chemical bonds are pointed out. An equation relating isomer shifts to nuclear deformation is given and applications to the study of various types of collective nuclear excitation are discussed. Limitations of the method are discussed. 49 references. (R.E.U.)
