SUMMARY One hundred specimens of nasopharyngeal secretion were collected from infants with acute respiratory disease and stored at -60°C before inoculation into tube cultures of bovine testis (BT) and HeLa (HL) cells. Of a total of 46 specimens which yielded respiratory syncytial virus, 45 did so in BT cells but only 32 in HL cells. The mean incubation time before a cytopathic effect was first detected was 6.5 days for BT cells and 10.6 days for HL cells.
