It has been claimed that Japanese are superior to Caucasians on visual memory tasks. The purpose of the present study was to examine the validity of this claim. Two visual memory tasks were administered to 124 young adults, 72 Japanese and 52 Caucasians. Japanese scored higher on one visual test (memory for abstract designs); there was no difference between groups on the other test (mental rotations). It appears that claims about the stability of cognitive abilities as tested by various measures are questionable.
