Drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, yarns have been heated for 1 min in silicone oil. The resulting samples were studied by x‐ray diffraction and mechanical properties were measured. The results suggest that drawn PET consists of highly extended molecules essentially parallel to one another, with few folds present. On heating, chain folding occurs. This model is very similar to that proposed by Dismore and Statton for drawn nylon 66 yarns.
