Caught in its own trap: Lysozyme directs the formation of silica or titania nanoparticles (see SEM images) under ambient conditions and is simultaneously entrapped while in the active bactericidal form. The ability to encapsulate an active antimicrobial protein within inorganic nanoparticles provides an opportunity to create bionanocomposite materials that resist bacterial activity, for use as broad-spectrum antifouling materials.
