(Abstracted from Anesth Analg, 122:1807–1815, 2016) As advances in surgical and anesthesiologic techniques and longer life expectancy have increased the number of elderly surgical patients, some studies have found advanced age to be a predictor for worse postoperative outcomes, whereas others have found that comorbidity, rather than age, should be the primary consideration with respect to postoperative mortality. Fast-track protocols have been introduced in many elective procedures over the last decade, including total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
