Why the study?
Does epoetin targeted to a normal hemoglobin concentration (14 g/dl) improve cardiovascular parameters and quality of life compared to a target of 10 g/dl in hemodialysis patients?
Population
14 haemodialysis patients (12 male) aged between 23 and 65 years; 6 patients were known to be hypertensive.
Comparison
Epoetin targeted to a hemoglobin concentration… vs Epoetin targeted to a hemoglobin concentration…
Design
RCT, Randomized to maintain one or other of the target levels for 6 weeks…
Follow-up
6 weeks per target level (18 months total study period)

Supports targeting hemoglobin 14 g/dl in hemodialysis; confirms hemodynamic and quality-of-life benefits versus lower targets.
Does epoetin targeted to a normal hemoglobin concentration (14 g/dl) improve cardiovascular parameters and quality of life compared to a target of 10 g/dl in hemodialysis patients?
Normalizing hemoglobin to 14 g/dl with epoetin in hemodialysis patients provides significant hemodynamic benefits (reduced cardiac output and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter) and improves quality of life compared to a target of 10 g/dl.
