The rate of polymerization of styrene in the presence of natural rubber was measured and the following empirical rate equation was obtained. Where K and A are constants and [R], [M] and [I] the concentrations of natural rubber, styrene and initiator respectively. This equation agreed with the theoretical rate equation derived kinetically. Chain tranfer constants of styrene to natural rubber were computed, by using azobisisobutyronitrile (AZBN) or benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. Grafting efficiency, Fg. was calculated from the weight of free polystyrene. It was concluded that the value of Fg. increased with the increase of the concentration of rubber and with decrease of those of monomer and initiator. These tendencies agreed with the results of kinetical considerations. Fg. increased in the order of AZBN < bis‐(1‐hydroxycyclohexy1)‐peroxide (BHCP) < BPO.
