Study of the S2 emission and excitation spectra in solid Ar suggests reassignment of the fluorescence. The absorbing B 3Σ−u state undergoes efficient nonradiative transition into a lower lying electronic state correlating with two 3P sulphur atoms, probably the B″ 3Πu state. This reassignment is consistent with recent observations of the S2 emission in matrix thermoluminescence experiments. Both the B 3Σ−u and the B″ 3Πu state are even in the solid strongly perturbed.
