High early mortality in postinfarction VSD warrants caution with immediate surgery; cohort data support delayed intervention but leave optimal timing unresolved.
Does the timing of surgical treatment and other pre-operative variables affect operative mortality in patients with postinfarction ventricular septal defect?
In patients with postinfarction ventricular septal defect, delayed surgical intervention (>3 weeks) is associated with significantly lower operative mortality compared to early intervention, though hemodynamic stability and VSD size are also critical prognostic factors.
