An injection of 10 μg of LH remarkably increased the secretion of 3 neutral steroids from the ovary of the early proestrous rats, and at least 7 neutral steroids were detected in comparatively large amounts in the ovarian venous plasma. Six neutral steroids were isolated from the plasma. From the criteria of gas-liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, microchemical reactions and mass-spectrometric analysis, these steroids were identified as 5αpregnane- 3,20-dione, progesterone, 3α-hydroxy- 5α-pregnan-20-one, 20α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-3- one, 20α-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one and 5α-pregnane- 3α,20α-diol.
