Hyaluronic acid is shown to be degraded irreversibly by oxygen in the presence of „reducing agents”︁ such as ascorbic acid, thiols, or ferrous ions. The degradation could be inhibited by substances such as sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, penicillamine, and thiourea. The reaction is called the ORD reaction (oxidative‐reductive depolymerization). It is suggested that the reaction may control tissue permeability, in vivo, and play a part in arthritic processes.
