Describes a helium-neon laser infrared analyser for detecting alcohol vapour in human breath.
Laser-based breath alcohol analysis shows technical feasibility in humans; leaves open prospective validation before clinical adoption.
A double beam infrared vapour analyser employing a 2 mW He-Ne laser as the source of 3.39 mu m radiation is described. Its performance in the analysis of ethyl alcohol vapour-air mixtures is given with regard to sensitivity and baseline drift and some results obtained from breath alcohol measurements with human subjects are reported.
