4 first-person accounts are presented charting the routes that reciprocal teaching took from the college classroom to a variety of classroom adaptations. After a college professor chronicles her presentation of the reciprocal teaching strategy and other strategies in a graduate course, 3 teachers describe how they taught the strategies in their classrooms at grades 1, 4, and 7. Teachers discuss their experiences using reciprocal teaching and the other strategies as they learned by trial and error and from each other how to make reciprocal teaching work in their classrooms. These teachers learned to use strategies in combination to produce results that differed from those that the original proponents of the strategies envisioned.
